.b (‘dot be’)

Mindfulness Curriculum for Young People, ages 11-18
.b is a fun, engaging and useful 10-session mindfulness course for young people, adapted from the adult courses Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy. It has been evaluated positively by the University of Cambridge and Oxford Brookes, and can be used in a wide range of contexts and age ranges. The core of the programme reflects the name - .b – the dot stands for ‘stop’ and the ‘b’ stands for ‘breathe’ and ‘just be’.

It is ideally suited to Transition Year Programmes, the mission statement of which is ‘to promote the personal, social, educational and vocational development of pupils and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society.’ However, it is also suitable for all year groups, covering concepts of the SPHE and CSPE Curricula and also works well as a lunch time course. This course works equally well in mainstream classes and special needs contexts, where the special needs are in the areas of emotional and behavioural disorders.

School Completion Programmes, which aim ‘to have a positive impact on retention for young people at risk of early school leaving…. achieved in a number of ways utilising a range of innovative, creative as well as tried and tested interventions’ may consider including the .b curriculum as an innovative, evidence-based intervention for the children and young people involved in SCPs.
